Steps to perform a Xylan OmniSwitch software upgrade

An unofficial guide.

1) Login to switch with the serial console port. Don't 'telnet' in.

	Welcome to the Xylan OmniSwitch! Version 3.2.6
	login   : admin
	password: switch (or whatever your password is)

2) Issue an 'ls' command and write down on paper a list of all the filenames that end with ".img" or ".pga". Double-check that you didn't forget any.

3) Connect the laptop / server with the new Xylan software revision to an ethernet port on the switch. You may have to change the IP Address of your laptop / server to be on the same IP subnet as the switch to be able to communicate with it.

First, Become root. Use 'su' to do this. Then, change your primary ethernet interface (usually "le0" or "hme0" on Sun's, "eth0" on Linux, "net0" on HP/UX, or "ec0" or "ef0" on SGI's) to an IP address on the same subnet as the switch: # ifconfig le0 192.168.10.5	Click {START}. Select Settings. Select Control Panel. Double-click on Network. Look in the box for the entry that binds your TCP/IP driver to your Ethernet Card, like "TCP/IP -> 3Com Etherlink III". Double-click on this entry. From here you can set your computer's IP address.

4) FTP from the laptop to the switch.

5) Make a local directory on your laptop to save the current software. It is best to name the directory after the name of the switch. Change into that new directory.

6) Backup all the old "code" that's on the switch by downloading it to your laptop / server. First, do an "ls" to a get a list of all the files...

(Only files with the following extensions should be downloaded: img,pga,cnf,cfg,cmd,conf. As an example, all the files that we have indicated with asterisks before them would be backed up.)

now set the FTP session to "binary" mode...

then "get" all the ".img", ".pga", ".cnf", ".cfg", ".conf", and ".cmd" files that were in the "ls" listing, one at a time...

(and so on until you have all the ".img", ".pga", ".cnf", ".cfg", ".conf", and ".cmd" files.) Double-check that you didn't forget any. Get a list of the files in your local directory with "!dir" (or "!ls" on UNIX).

(and all of the files you just downloaded should show up here.)

NOTE: If you have a 32 or 56 megabyte SIMM, you also need to backup all the ".img", ".pga", ".cnf", ".cfg", ".conf", and ".cmd" files in the "/simm" directory.

HOW TO TELL: If you DON'T KNOW if you have a 32/56 meg SIMM, you can check by trying to change into the "/simm" directory and getting a file list. If it fails with the "invalid directory" message on either the "cd" or "ls" commands, then you DO NOT have a 32/56 megabyte SIMM.

(You can return to the main directory by typing "cd /flash")

7)Now that all the files are backed up, we can proceed with the upgrade. Change into the directory on your local system where the Xylan CD is, or where you downloaded the new images to. Get a directory listing to confirm that you see the ".img" files.

8) Delete All the ".img" and ".pga" files on the switch. An easy way to do this is with the "imgcl" command. You will be prompted to confirm. This can take a few minutes, as the switch needs to defragment the flash file system in the process.

9) Proceed to upload, one-at-a-time, every ".img" and ".pga" file that was on the switch before (you should have penciled this down in step 2. The FTP session should still be in "binary" mode. You can issue another "bin" command to confirm this. Check them off your paper as you upload them. First, issue a "hash" command to turn on visual hash-marks.

(And so on until all the ".img"'s that were on the switch before have been uploaded.)

10) Reboot the switch. This can been done hours, or days later if desired. Whenever you're ready to experience a one-to-five minute downtime and risk the switch possibly not coming back up is a good time. It is best to be at the laptop / server that you backed up the old code onto before rebooting.

The switch should just come back up and begin operating as before in a few minutes. Allow it to fully initialize before attempting login.
NOTE: If you ever see a message saying "Chassis status changing, hit CTRL-C to abort", DO NOT hit CTRL-C. That option is for emergencies only. Using CTRL-C may appear to help but actually will just leave the switch in an uncertain state. Just be patient and a minute or two later it should be ready.

For Dual-MPM switches only:

After the switch finishes booting up, login to the Primary MPM (the one with the PRI L.E.D. light lit) and issue the "imagesync" and "configsync" commands to load the upgraded "code" onto the Seconday MPM. If the wrong MPM boots up as Primay, you can issue the "renounce" command to have the switch reboot with the Secondary MPM as Primary.
